SUMMARY:Gallery Talk and Tour\, Memory: Moshe Gershuni (Members Only) 2 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:On our visit to the Congregation Mishkan Or Museum in Beachwood\, we’ll join Katya Oicherman on a tour of the exhibition Memory: Moshe Gershuni. The project\, a collaboration with co-curator Matthew Garson and the Jewish Federation of Cleveland\, examines the work of the preeminent Israeli avant-garde artist Moshe Gershuni (1936–2017) through Kaddish\, his extraordinary portfolio of experimental prints. In Kaddish Gershuni’s images accompany the Jewish-American Beat poet Allan Ginsburg’s lamentation over his mother’s life and death\, embodying in their evasiveness the work of memory and grief. \nImage credit: Moishe Gershuni (Israeli\, 1936–2017). SUMMARY:Member Event - Gallery Talk and Tour in Karamu Artists Inc.: Printmaking\, Race\, and Community
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk and Tour in Karamu Artists Inc.: Printmaking\, Race\, and Community\nMay 7\, 2:00 and 6:00 p.m\nCMA\, Galleries 101A–B \nCurators Britany Salsbury and Erin Benay will take us on a deep dive into Karamu Artists Inc.\, which explores the groundbreaking role that graphic arts played at Cleveland’s Karamu House\, one of the nation’s preeminent Black community arts centers. Beginning in the 1930s\, Karamu housed a printmaking workshop where artists and community members alike—including a young Langston Hughes—could experiment with various techniques\, playing on printmaking’s fundamental democracy and accessibility. This led to the founding of Karamu Artists Inc.\, a group that counted among its members some of the most recognized Black printmakers of the WPA era. This exhibition is the first to place Karamu Artists Inc. and its innovative use of the graphic arts within the broader context of American art during the 1930s and 1940s. \nImage Caption: Artist’s Life\, No. 1\, 1939. SUMMARY:Member Event - Studio Visit with Artist Miguel A. Aragón
DESCRIPTION:Join executive director Nicole Donnelly for an intimate conversation with master printmaker and professor Miguel Aragón\, one of three remarkable artists who’ll be visiting the Morgan as part of the Collaborative Residency for Artists and Apprentices. This grant\, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts\, aims to introduce leading contemporary artists\, all of them non-papermakers\, to the transformative medium of hand papermaking. “Using the idea of erasure as language\,” says Aragón\, “I explore subjects of violence\, memory\, perception\, and the multiple\, through processes that are reductive. I endeavor to illustrate how erasure\, however violent and destructive\, can also be an act of creation.” \nPhoto credit: Imprinting History\, 2017. SUMMARY:Member Event - VIP Reception at Zygote Press: PROOF Fellows Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:VIP Reception at Zygote Press: PROOF Fellows Exhibition Opening\nMarch 14\, 5:00 p.m.\nZygote Press \nJoin fellow Print Club members for a special visit to Zygote Press\, where we’ll explore the studio\, view an exhibition of work by this year’s PROOF fellows\, and meet the artists themselves. \nZygote’s PROOF (Print Residency of Ohio’s Future) Fellowship is an annual residency program for Northeast Ohio artists from historically underrepresented communities. The program’s aim is to offer non-printmaking artists the opportunity to learn a variety of printmaking techniques and to then complete a body of work in their new medium. This year Zygote has hosted a photographer\, two designers\, and three multidisciplinary artists\, whom you can read more about here.) This exhibition is the culmination of a year’s efforts in the studio\, and the results are extraordinary.

SUMMARY:Member Event - Lecture and Reception: Picasso and Paper
DESCRIPTION:Lecture and Reception: Picasso and Paper\nJanuary 22\, 2025\n6:00 p.m.\nCMA private lecture room\, followed by a reception and self-guided gallery visit\nCurator Britany Salsbury will offer a lecture on the exhibition Picasso and Paper\, which showcases nearly 300 works spanning the artist’s career. Picasso’s appreciation of—and relentless experimentation with—paper is revealed in works that include collages of cut-and-pasted paper\, sculptures made from pieces of torn and burnt paper\, manipulated photographs\, drawings in virtually all available media\, and prints in an array of techniques. Picasso and Paper presents such works chronologically alongside a limited number of closely related paintings and sculptures. Seen together\, these groupings highlight the connections that the artist saw between media and the integral role that paper played throughout his creative practice.
